Shop, Eat, and Be Merry at the Christkindlmarket in Chicago

Frost is in the air, and eggnog and gingerbread are in our lattes! If you’re looking for a mini-adventure this holiday season, make the trip to the annual Christkindlmarket in Chicago. The market is a little less than an hour drive from Two Itasca Place Apartments and is free to attend.

A Chicago tradition since 1996, Christkindlmarket is celebrating its 22nd year of spreading holiday cheer. Influenced by classic seasonal markets in Nuremberg, Germany dating from the middle ages, European and American traditions abound at this cheerful market.

Exceptional Entertainment

The market hosts live performances almost every day. Watch artists perform everything from medieval madrigals to polkas and pop; you’ll even find balletic excerpts from the Nutcracker. Don’t miss a visit from Christkind, the traditional giver of gifts. She wanders the market on Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the season in her white robes and stately golden crown.

Find the Perfect Gift at the Christkindlmarket in Chicago

The Christkindlmarket in Chicago is a great shopping alternative to the average mall dash. Numerous vendors hail from Germany, offering time-honored handcrafts like clocks, glassware, ornaments, and more. Each year the market produces a festive mug as a special souvenir.

Specialty Eats

Enjoy strolling through the stalls with a steaming cup of gl√ľhwein, a traditional German mulled wine, and a piping hot soft pretzel or a succulent, spicy bratwurst. If you’d rather have a little something sweet, try a mug of hot chocolate. Indulge in a warm apple strudel or sweet stollen cake with marzipan and raisins.
