Not far from Two Itasca Place Apartments is a scenic 1,167-acre destination known as the Timber Ridge Forest Preserve. It’s made up savannas, oak woodlands, and natural prairies, and the ephemeral ponds are home to northern leopard frogs. There is much see and do during the winter months, including:
Hiking and Cross-Country Skiing
Timber Ridge has two miles of trails that are perfect for hiking and cross-country skiing. The preserve serves as the trailhead for the Great Western Trail and Illinois Prairie Path.
You can enjoy ice fishing on most lakes in the preserve including Timber Ridge. At least four inches of ice must be present, and fish include crappie, bluegill, and largemouth bass.
Kline Creek Farm
Journey back in time to experience what life was like on a working farm in the 1890s. Visitors can take a stroll through the property, and along the way, they’ll meet costumed interpreters who use the tools and techniques of the past. The farm also hosts fun events throughout the year. Here are a few upcoming events:
Farmhouse Museum Tour: Living by Lamplight
December 27th, 30th, and 31st
This unique tour highlights the benefits and challenges of living by sunlight and kerosene lamps. The docents show how the home was used for both work and relaxation and how it served as a building block for the rural community.
Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides
Take a fun, twenty-minute ride to learn about farming with real horsepower.
Farm Life in Winter
January 3th-5th, plus additional dates throughout the month.
During this time of year, the staff is busy repairing tools, cutting blocks for the ice house, and checking the sheep shed for new lambs. Visitors are welcome to join the fun, and if there’s enough snow, the afternoon will end with a sleigh ride.
